Acupuncture Treatment for Knee Pain

Knee pain is often treated with medication or injections. However, in some cases, pain may continue despite medical treatment, especially when walking or going up and down stairs.

In such cases, muscle tension and trigger points may be contributing to the knee pain.

At Elle Acupuncture in Tokyo, Ikebukuro, we use not only traditional acupuncture based on Eastern medicine, but also trigger point acupuncture, which focuses on tight and sensitive areas within the muscles that may be related to pain.

We Treat More Than Just the Knee

When treating knee pain, inserting acupuncture needles only around the knee may not always be sufficient.

Many muscles around the hip, thigh, and lower back are connected functionally with the knee. For this reason, we carefully assess the muscles of the lower back, buttocks, thighs, and knee before treatment.

For example, when pain occurs on the outside of the knee, tension or trigger points in the outer thigh or gluteal muscles may be involved. In such cases, acupuncture may also be applied to these areas.

When pain occurs on the inside of the knee, muscles on the inner and back portions of the thigh, as well as muscles around the back of the knee, may be involved.

Rather than focusing only on the painful area, we believe it is important to identify and treat muscles that may be contributing to the pain.

Acupuncture for the Lower Back and Buttocks

At Elle Acupuncture, we also examine the condition of the lower back and gluteal muscles in patients with knee pain.

When these muscles become excessively tight, movement of the lower extremities may become restricted, and circulation in the legs may also be affected. This can increase the mechanical burden placed on the knee.

When necessary, acupuncture is therefore performed on the lower back and buttocks to help reduce muscle tension throughout the lower body.

Eastern Medicine Approach for Weather-Related Knee Pain

Some people notice that their knee pain becomes worse on rainy days or when a typhoon approaches.

In traditional Eastern medicine, these symptoms may be associated with impaired fluid metabolism within the body.

Depending on the individual’s constitution and symptoms, we may use acupuncture points such as Sanyinjiao (SP6), which is traditionally used to support fluid balance.

By combining trigger point acupuncture with traditional Eastern medicine, we aim to treat not only the knee itself but also the overall condition of the body.

Weight Management Is Also Important

Weight gain can increase the load placed on the knees during walking and when using stairs.

If your knee pain has worsened together with weight gain, appropriate weight management may also be an important part of reducing the burden on your knees.

Acupuncture should therefore be considered as one part of a broader approach to knee health.

For Those Suffering from Knee Pain

Knee pain may be related not only to the knee joint itself, but also to muscle tension in the lower back, buttocks, and thighs, as well as the overall condition of the body.

If you have been receiving medical treatment but your knee pain continues, or if you are interested in incorporating acupuncture as a gentle complementary treatment, please feel free to contact us.

At Elle Acupuncture in Tokyo, Ikebukuro, we provide individualized treatment combining trigger point acupuncture and traditional Eastern medicine according to each patient’s symptoms and physical condition.
